When young professionals wanted to create a family-friendly custom home with some bold design elements, they turned to Jeff Frostholm of Frostholm Construction LLC to build in Fairhope’s Song Grove subdivision. The result came from a true collaboration between the builder, home planner and homeowners.
“This particular owner knew what she wanted the elevation of the home to look like, so we sat down with Laura and Ryan Burton [homeowners] and Bob Chatham of Chatham Home Planning, and started working on the plans,” said Frostholm. “Through this we came up with the floor plan and elevations. Laura had a board of many of the interior features of the house. We worked closely with her to incorporate all of her design choices into the house. The Burtons were great to work for on this amazing home.”
The 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath home covers 3,368 square feet and is designed in a modern farmhouse style. A screened-in porch at the front of the home is a popular spot for socializing with neighbors and enjoying meals al fresco. A porch and firepit at the rear of the home offer additional areas for enjoying the outdoors.
Inside, the informal layout lends itself to the needs of a young family, but it’s still packed with plenty of drama, starting with the bold color choice in the entry way that extends up the staircase into the upstairs hall

“We have never painted stair treads a dark color,” said Frostholm.“This homeowner went for some bold colors and it paid off. Everything turned out great.”
The family room, one of Frostholm’s favorite parts of the house, features eye-catching accents such as a plaster fireplace surround and large pine beams overhead. It leads into the kitchen, which is outfitted with Thermador appliances and not one but two expansive islands. One of the kitchen’s main features presented a bit of a challenge to construct.
“The gold pipe shelving was a challenge because we have never done it before,” Frostholm said. “We had a local fabrication shop, Fairhope Iron Works, help us. My project manager, Michael Neese, and the owner of the fab shop, Frank, had several meetings to make it just right. Once we got the pipes installed, our cabinet shop had to build all the shelves. The whole thing turned out great and is a major focal point of the kitchen.”
Another challenge was trying to finish the house after Hurricane Sally. The landscaping had just been finished when the hurricane hit, and it took several weeks to clean all the debris from the neighborhood.
The incorporation of bold paint colors and whimsical touches—like fish wallpaper—play against the rustic beams, hardwood floors, Old Chicago pavers, Artisan siding accents and other elements to create the family-friendly home the homeowners desired.
“There were a couple of unique features I wanted and hesitantly mentioned to Jeff, not knowing how these ideas would be received,” said homeowner Laura Burton. “He welcomed the challenges and knew just what steps to take [and which] subs to contact. The final product was phenomenal…We couldn’t be happier with our new home and can honestly say we wouldn’t change a thing.”
